Today DJI released its latest and cheapest drone, the Spark to public:
DJI claims it as a drone for everyone. Well in many ways this could be true. But as always depends on what you want to do with it.
They simplified close range control with a gesture feature, mid range can be controlled with a smart phone and longer range (up to 1.6mi / 2km) can be done with a small dedicated control unit.
The camera is housed in a dual axis gimbal for stability and offers 12MP pictures. Video can be shot up to HD in 30 frames.
Smart wise they spent some of the features from their bigger drone brothers and sisters.
So DJI Spark also gets some guide and avoidance and a ground vision positioning system without the bigger price tag.
This will help many beginners to fly their drone more safe and stable. And will also probably produce less bad reports in the news when people crash.
So how does this compare to DJI’s other drones?
This is DJI’s tiniest, newest entry drone. Lowest price but offers a very good feature set for the asking price.
The current price tag of USD $499 or €599 in Europe for the drone alone and USD $699 / €799 for a fly more bundle is not a screaming dumping price. They know that no one else offers similar features for such a price yet. But it seems fair compared to the market.
They clearly separate their product line by the image quality you can create with. The Spark probably has the same image sensor as the new size DJI Mavic Pro, but if you want to Shoot any better than HD, then you’ll have to buy a step up, Same goes for flight time (16 min).
On the other hand all accessorizes, like additional batteries are also cheaper then what they ask for their higher grade drones (nice and smart move DJI)
Here are some DJI Spark facts:
- Gesture (very close), smart phone (up to 100 yrd) or dedicated controller control of the drone (up to 1.6mi / 2km)
- Small footprint to carry along
- Speed up to 31mph / 50km/h
- 16 minutes of flighttime
- Guide and avoidance and ground vision positioning system for positioning and obstacle sensing
- Many smart camera shoot features (dronie, helix, circe, follow me etc.)
- Smart flight modes like touch to fly
- Safety features like automatic return to home in case of loss of the control signal
- Weight 300g
- 5 colors available
Another nice worth to mention fact is, that DJI will pack some propeller guards in the box.
So who is it for?
I’d say drone enthusiasts and beginners. Advanced and professional users will probably skip it.
But hey, in the end the best camera is the one you carry with you.
DJI said they’ll ship the first batch out mid June 2017. Lets hope they ramped up production already, so people won’t have to wait as long as they had for the DJI Mavic pro.
