Panasonic GH4 testing
Panasonic Switzerland was very nice and loaned me a pre production sample of the GH4 for a couple of days.
As I just got it today i can’t tell you too much about it yet.
I’ve only done some GH4 hand held shooting but really love it already.
My Canon c300 has a great form factor too, but the compact size of GH4 can be a real plus in some situations.
And I can really see how this cam could team up with it. Even I will use it up in the air on a multicopter most of the time.
Day 2:
Today I took the Gh4 out for a quick shoot in the City. You can find some new added files to download on the bottom of this post.
Handling seems great. But focusing on the Gh4 screen is not always easy. The peaking shows sharp but when you check the footage sometimes its a bit off. This might be a flaw in the v0.4 firmware. So as this is not a final product this will hopefull change a bit.
Otherwise I would suggest to add a external monitor for some shots. The camera has also frozen a few times. But my guess is this is due of the beta firmware also.
As I’m completly new to the GH body, I need to get my self used a bit to it. But that should not be a big thing. All needed buttons are in a nice layout. And once you understand how the menu works you’ll reach anything fast. Either trough buttons or touchscreen.
Audio vise I’m really surprised how good it is out of the cam. It’s far from perfect. But better then what I have heard from other “DSLR” formfactor cams.

I’ve also already tested if the Panasonic GH4 fits the DJI GH3 Z15 gimbal.
It actually fits just like the Panasonic GH3 and is balanced out of the box.
Maybee just a tiny bit of fine tuning but nothing major. Both the GH4 and GH3 were loaded with battery and SD Card.
You’ll need a new hdmi cable, as the GH3 uses a hdmi mini vs. hdmi Micro on the GH4.
So you’ll need someone to resolder the 19 pin cable, or you will need to build some kind of Adapter solution.
I’m pretty sure DJI will offer a matching cable very shortly. Ist also unproven yet if the GH3 hdmi to analog converter will work with the GH4 Signal.
All we know yet is, that it works with a direct connect to the Lightbridge. But I’ll be testing a new hdmi converter soon. So that might be a solution too.
Weight wise the GH3 and GH4 are very similar. The GH4 weights only 11g more.
Saddly I can’t bring it up in the air right now, as I’m still missing some parts for my new DJI S1000.
If I find a pilot with a capable UAV in time i’ll do a test for sure 🙂

Cinelike D is pretty much like a Technicolour style flat profile which is probably the one I’ll use most one on the GH4.
Cinelike V seems to crush all the shadows into black.

Hast du vielleicht inzwischen schon ein paar Lowlight – Erfahrungen sammeln können?
Ich komme nämlich von der GH2 und bin mir noch nicht ganz sicher ob mir die Performance in Zukunft ausreichen wird, da ich doch sehr oft an Grenzen gestossen bin.
Dann gibt es verschiedene Lowlight-Test im Netz, mit recht unterschiedlichen Ergebnissen.
Mich würde deine Einschätzung wirklich sehr interessieren.
Vorhin wurde die Sony 7s vorgestellt, kaum rauschen erkennbar. Allerdings nur Steady Shots (Rolling Shutter?)
4k brauche ich noch nicht unbedingt, so gesehen wäre es vielleicht interessant. Auch wenn die Glas-Auswahl noch sehr beschränkt ist.

Bis Dato habe ich noch nicht wirklich genau auswertbare Lowlightaufnahmen gemacht. Was ich aber bis jetzt gesehen habe gefällt mir ausserodentlich gut und ist def. besser als bei der GH4.
Zudem könnte man ja das 4k 4:2:0 Bilde in ein 1080P 4:4:4 konvertieren. Natürlich ist dann auch dann nicht da was nicht aufgezeichnet wurde, lässt aber massive mehr Spielraum zu.
Es gibt da ein Vergleichs Clip zwischen GH2, GH3 und 5D mkIII. Hast du den schon gesehen? https://vimeo.com/90981412
Genau nach diesem Clip wollte ich die GH4 sofort vorbestellen.
Dann habe ich allerdings noch diesen gesehen und mich erstmal zurückgehalten. 🙂

Da mir das “Bild” und die Bedienung der GH2 wirklich gut gefallen, würde ich gerne bei Panasonic bleiben – auch wenn der geniale Multi-Aspect-Sensor leider nicht mehr (ausser G6) verbaut wird.
Aber Lowlight ist für mich inzwischen ein extrem wichtiger Faktor geworden und ich würde am liebsten weiterhin nur mit einer Kamera arbeiten.
Gibt’s da vielleicht noch einen Geheimtipp von deiner Seite ?
Sorry für die vielen Fragen, aber es wird immer schwieriger sich zu entscheiden.
Tja, die eierlegende Wollmilchsau gibts nicht. Mich persönlich hat die GH4 im meinem eigenen Kurztest überzeugt. Was für mich funktioniert kann aber bei dir ganz anders sein. Für mich spricht das kompakte Format, das leichte Gewicht (muss bei mir ja auch an einen Multikopter) und 4K.
Zudem wird die GH4 eine wunderbare B-Cam und Backuplösung zu meiner C300 werden. Wenn du komplett unsicher bist, würde ich mit einbem Kauf warten bis du die Kamera mal selbst testen konntest. Kazfen aufgrund von irgendwelchen Berichten finde ich immer etwas riskant.
Sorry, my S1000 is still not ready, so I was not able to test fly it :/
I’ll post some aerial footage as soon as my S1000 is finished, and I’ve got my own Gh4.
Danke für deine Antwort Mathias. Die eierlegende Wollmilchsau werden sie uns wohl leider niemals geben können, sonst würden ja auf einen Schlag Hundert Tausende ihren Arbeitsplatz verlieren und alle mit der gleichen Cam arbeiten… 😉
Werde wahrscheinlich die Combo GH4 + Sony A7s versuchen, auch wenn ich glaube, dass ihre “Bilder” nicht zusammen passen. Haben eine komplett unterschiedliche, emotionale Bild-Wirkung auf mich !
Die C300 wäre ein Traum…liebe ihr Bild, aber noch etwas zu teuer für mich.
Aber so wie du vorschlägst, werde ich noch ein wenig warten mit der Entscheidung.

danke für deine Infos hier. Ich benutze meine GH2 immer noch im Kopter. Dem Reiz der GH4 bin ich aber auch erlegen. Werde vermutlich im Winter den Umstieg wagen. Welchen HDMI zu AV Konverter benutzt du denn? Ich mache das noch immer mit einer separaten CAM. Würde gerne an der GH2 schon mal anfangen umzusteigen, sollte dann an beiden GHs laufen.
